Determination is the one component that helps a wrestler defeat his opponent on the wrestling mat.

Wrestling: a sport of take downs and pins, attempting to move their opponent onto their shoulder blades for just one second. The wrestler pins to win or to simply out score them.

Sophomore Ron Marquez was filled with determination Saturday, February 11th during the Valley Oak League Wrestling Championship Tournament at Central Catholic High School.  Marquez was worried about his lack of experience entering the tournament.  It is his first year ever wrestling. This was his first tournament back after an illness.

He competed with such determination because he said that he was not just wrestling for himself, but for the glory of God.

Marquez said he then remembered and told himself, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

In the championship match of the 285 pound Heavyweight Division, Marquez faced a wrestler from Manteca High School. Marquez was down 4-5 in the match until he took down his opponent late in the 3rd period to take the lead. Marquez used that momentum to put his opponent into a power half-nelson and pinned him with a few seconds remaining on the clock.

Marquez said, "I prayed to God." He said this helped him defeat the Goliaths in his path to become a Valley Oak League wrestling champion. This victory was his final match of the day.

He is thankful for the confidence his coaches, Seth Davis and Vince Bordi, had in him throughout the season. Marquez plans on participating in Jujitsu martial arts during the off season.
