East Union’s Winter Sports Banquet

EUHS  v soccer 1 On Monday, February 27th, East Union High School held their annual Winter Sports Banquet.  The event is held to commend all winter sports teams at the end of their season; especially the student athletes for their hard work and dedication to their team. 

The Varsity Girls Soccer awardees are pictured from left to right: Ilena Rivera (Most Valuable Player), Chelsey Medeiros (Most Valuable Defender), Marianna Huizar (Most Valuable Rookie), Stephanie Flores (Lancer of the Year), and Chloe Cardenas (Most Valuable Leader).  

EUHS  boys wrestlingSenior and three year varsity player, Stephanie Flores said, “My season couldn’t have gone better!  I enjoyed being able to play with my friends one last time!”

The Boys Wrestling awardees pictured from left to right are: Coach Riendel, Enrique Mendoza (Coach’s Award), Jaysen Riendel (Most Outstanding Wrestler), Jason Betlej (Coach’s Award), Ruben Gallegos (Captains Award), Trinidad Diaz (Most Improved Wrestler), and Joe Luna (Most Outstanding Freshman). 

Junior, Jaysen Riendel had an outstanding season with a record of 28-4.  All four of his losses were to opponents who placed or qualified for state.  He commended fellow opponent, Matt Kjeldgaard, from Oakdale High School. “I will always remember my matches against Matt because they were always so fun and he is such an incredible athlete. He is also one of the funniest guys I’ve met through wrestling,” stated Riendel. 

EUHS  varsity girls bballThe Girls Varsity Basketball awardees pictured from left to right, Ruby Daube (MVP), Jenna Zuniga (Defensive Player of the Year), Hailey Gosney (Captains Award), Donja Payne (Offensive Player of the Year Award), and Jessica Pablo (Captains Award).  

Ruby Daube was voted First Team All-League, was the second leading scorer in the Valley Oak League, as well as leading the VOL in free throw percentage with a whopping 72%!  She also led her team in steals, assists, and points. 

EUHS varsity boys bballThe Varsity Boys Basketball awardees pictured from left to right are: Gysbertus (Gyse) Hulsebosch (MVP), Scott Morenzone (Coach’s Award), Blake Greenlee (Most Improved), Jesse Anzar (Defensive Player of the Year), Angel Sena (Lancer Award), and Jordan Barajas (Captains Award).  

Gyse Hulsebosch had a remarkable season this year and averaged about 24 points a game!  He was one point shy of breaking the school record for most points scored in a game (43 points).  Hulsebosch also set a new school record for most three pointers in a season.
