Elisa Vallejos was grateful to the Manteca High girls’ varsity soccer program. In particular, she was referring to the Buffaloes for their recent effort in the Kicking for a Cure game.

They raised $8,256 during the event held Feb. 14, in turn, donating the proceeds to assist Vallejos’ 15-month-old daughter Amaya Lopez, who was diagnosed with Stage III liver cancer some eight months ago.

“Everything has been OK with Amaya,” said Vallejos.

Her daughter had the cancerous portion of her liver removed, and undergoes treatments on a regular basis at Oakland’s Kaiser Hospital.

“This will help,” Vallejos said after receiving a check from coach Justin Coenenberg and his MHS squad on Wednesday.

In the seven years of conducting the Kicking for a Cure game, the Buffaloes’ girls soccer program has raised over $56,000 and counting.

Coenenberg indicated that this annual fundraising event is a chance to bring local awareness and hope to those families with a youngster fighting cancer.

“Our coaches, players, faculty, families and friends have all been affected by cancer in some way,” he said.
