Modernization plans are based on the MUSD 2014 Facility Master Plan, which identified approximately 600 million dollars-worth of need. The Measure G bond, however, is only 159 million dollars.  Thus, to fit the budget, modernizations are primarily focused on four categories:  Health and Safety, Major and Deferred Maintenance, Modernization and Upgrades, and Code Compliance.

Budgets for each site’s modernization are being established on how each site’s needs fit those categories.

Site Selection Process

The selection process had three necessary variables:

  • Modernization Eligibility based on OPSC standards
  • Elementary vs. Secondary School
  • Age of Site

Selected from these three factors were the "Worst First".  These sites had the most modernization needs, including safety concerns, facilities not up to code, deferred maintenance, and general renovations.  Some of the most common areas in need of improvement were outdated alarm systems, cracked pavement, dilapidated portables, and campuses not efficiently secured with fencing.

The first five schools chosen were:

  • Golden West Elementary
  • Lathrop Elementary
  • Lincoln Elementary
  • Sequoia Elementary
  • Shasta Elementary

Common Modernization Needs

  • Portable Replacements
  • Roofing repairs
  • HVAC (Heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system repair
  • Life Safety and Security
  • ADA Compliance and site upgrades
  • Playground Safety Concerns
  • Failing Asphalt
  • Carpet Replacement
  • Playfield Improvements
  • Nutrition Program Needs
